Celebrating National Children's Book Week: The Power of Science and Diversity in Children's Books

National Children's Book Week is a time to celebrate the magic of storytelling, imagination, and education. This year, we want to highlight the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and diversity in children's books. These two factors, when combined, have the incredible potential to ignite young minds and inspire a lifelong love for science.

At Science is Elementary, we believe in the power of science education and diversity in literature. That is why we created our unique series of books, "Science is for Me!"—a collection specially designed for pre- and emerging readers. What sets these books apart is their focus on children of color as protagonists who use science to solve everyday challenges.

Our "Science is for Me!" books offer a refreshing approach to science education. Children explore deep scientific concepts and connect with relatable stories that captivate their imagination. Each book is complemented with step-by-step illustrations for hands-on experiments, making learning fun and informative.

One of the standout features of the "Science is for Me!" series is its alignment with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). These books are a valuable addition to the classroom, enhancing existing curriculum or serving as a catalyst for new science education initiatives.

The class sets include:

  • An educator guide with a detailed lesson agenda, relevant NGSS standards, vocabulary, and extension activities.

  • 25 "Science is for Me!" student books, each featuring diverse protagonists and guiding students through an illustrated story paired with a hands-on science lesson.

  • 25 "Science is for Me!" adult companion books, designed to engage families in hands-on science and engineering, creating a bridge between home and school.

  • All the materials needed for 25 students to participate in the activities.

One of the most exciting aspects of "Science is for Me!" is its potential to spark a love for STEM both in the classroom and at home. By sending the completed kits and companion books home with students, families are encouraged to participate in these hands-on science and engineering experiences together. Whether you're a teacher, an informal educator, part of a large school district, or involved in an after-school club, you can make the STEM connection with "Science is for Me!" This National Children's Book Week, let's celebrate the magic of diversity and the world of STEM education as we empower the next generation of young scientists.
