Our educators: Marlon Nettles
One of our science educator’s, Marlon, answers some questions about his work as an educator at SiE and science education!
What made you interested in this work? Why did you want to be part of the SiE team?
As a scientist who was born and raised in Oakland and a product of Oakland Public Schools, I jumped at the opportunity to combine my passion for science with a genuine interest in seeing the underserved children of Oakland succeed.
What aspect of your work are you most excited about right now?
I love seeing the inner scientists come out of children right before my eyes. It’s like watching a beautiful flower bloom.
Why do you think elementary science education is so important?
Elementary science education is important because it provides children with the tools needed to foster critical thinking and real world problem solving.
What advice would you give to a kid who wants to be a scientist?
When looking for solutions, never stop at the obvious answer! Remember our Sun is also a star!
