Science is for Everyone: Gears

This month, our third-grade students studied gears.

Experimenting with Lego gears, students learned that gears can be used to:

  • change the direction of motion (adjacent gears rotate in opposite directions)

  • change the speed of motion (smaller gears rotate faster than larger gears)

  • change the location of motion (e.g., movement of your feet on bicycle pedals leads to movement of the wheel behind you thanks to the gears!).

The next time you are out for a bike ride, think about how changing the gear size changes the amount of force you need and the speed of your ride.
