Science is Elementary Hires Two Staff

Science is Elementary has continued the expansion of its leadership team with the addition of Tina Yerkes, director of development and donor relations, and Shannon Cherry, director of marketing and communications.

Tina, a former middle school science teacher and university lecturer, works to enhance fundraising and donor relations. She has been a nonprofit executive for many years, with a focus on creativity and fundraising. Tina led a regional research program that provided insight and data for strategic conservation planning and developed the funding for that program. Tina has earned a Ph.D. in zoology and has an MS in chemistry and ecology.

Three things you may not know about Tina:

  1. She’s a world-champion Kettlebell Sport athlete that competes on the USA team.

  2. Much of her scientific research was on waterfowl in cold regions.

  3. She’s not a fan of snow.

Shannon, a former TV anchor and reporter, transitioned into nonprofit communications and management early in her career, with a focus on advocacy, development, and marketing. She leads the marketing, communications, and outreach of SiE and its programs. In her 20+ years of NGO experience, Shannon has won numerous communications awards and raised more than $20 million for nonprofits. In addition, she has worked to change laws and policies to create a more equitable world. She has earned a master's degree in communication administration, focusing on the law, and is accredited in public relations.

Three things you may not know about Shannon:

  1. She sang with B.B. King.

  2. Her first interview as a reporter was at the age of five, doing a radio interview with Joe DiMaggio.

  3. Her dream as a child was to be an astronaut.
