Summer research for Science is for Me!

Science is Elementary is in the process of an in-depth evaluation of Science is for Me! (formerly SiE Books) with the help of two summer interns, Anjie Cao and Karenna Olson.

Anjie Cao is working on her Ph.D. in Psychology at Stanford University. Anjie brings her knowledge of data collection methodology and experience in formal observations of children.

Karenna is an undergraduate student at Southern Virginia University, completing a dual degree B.A. in Biochemistry and Spanish. She has experience as a classroom aide in an elementary school and as a medical interpreter for English-Spanish and Spanish-English translations.

Evaluations of the books consist of in-depth observations using protocols developed by field experts. We have two settings for these observations:

  • Library settings: to evaluate how adult caregivers and children interact with the books and materials when not directly instructed.

  • Out-of-school time: to evaluate how groups interact with Science is for Me! materials, led by adults who are not teachers nor have significant pedagogical training. The 20 sessions are hosted by several community-based organizations that we partner with.

The evaluations also include pre- and post-surveys of children, educators, and families. We anticipate observing about 100 families, 500 children, and 40 educators.

Results from these evaluations will be used to improve our current books and inform future adaptations.
