Volunteer Spotlight: Jake Dacy

We love our in-classroom volunteers, who make a difference to so many kids. This month, we spotlight Jake Dacy.

What do you do professionally?
Currently, I'm a stay-at-home dad.

Why did you decide to volunteer your time with Science is Elementary?
I wanted to focus my free time on supporting my kids, specifically in their school and extracurricular activities. Also, my kids are always excited to see me when I visit them at school!

What value do you think Science is Elementary brings to the classroom?
SiE takes scientific concepts and translates them into easy-to-understand, hands-on experiences for kids. Each activity is a fun experience for students to relate to concepts that may otherwise be challenging to understand.

Did volunteering with SiE in your daughter's class have any effect on your use of science activities or discussions at home?
Yes! My daughter and I were able to have more in-depth conversations about what she was learning in science at school and talk more about the concepts at home. For example, we made and tested two paper planes to help students learn about air resistance, and push-and-pull forces. My daughter brought her planes home, tested them in different locations around the house, and tried making her own designs.

Do you have any advice for other parents considering volunteering with Science is Elementary?
Just do it! It only takes an hour or so per month and your child will be much more engaged in the lesson when you are there with them to experience it. I'm so glad I was able to spend time with my daughter each month!
