Volunteer Spotlight: Leon Su

Leon Su has been a bright spot on our volunteer team since he joined us this fall, lending his expertise at Burnett Elementary school in Milpitas. He’s an accomplished life science researcher at Stanford University's School of Medicine. When Leon heard about Science in Education (SiE) and the mission to make science accessible and exciting, he knew he had to be part of it!

With his enthusiasm for science, he helps out in second grade but also pitches in when there are not enough volunteers for first or third grade.

"One of my goals is to show kids that science can be fun and accessible," Leon says.

He encourages students to make hypotheses and predictions, engage in hands-on experimentation, and carefully observe their observations, all the while working in groups and having lots of fun.

Recently, Leon taught a second-grade lesson on density. The kids thought the larger, heavier wood sphere would sink in water, but the paper clip wouldn't. It was a great way for them to learn that experiments don't always turn out how we think they will!

For Leon, this opportunity to pass on his love of science has been truly rewarding: "I am so excited about the future generation of curious minds!"
