World Water Week!

Let’s talk about a fantastic event that teaches us the importance of water and how we can take care of this precious resource!

What is World Water Week?

World Water Week is an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of water, one of Earth's most unique resources. From rivers to oceans, from raindrops to icebergs, and even our own bodies, water is everywhere and plays a vital role in our lives and the planet's health. Experts, non-profits, policymakers, and more gather this week in Stockholm, Sweden to discuss water conservation, and sustainable practices that can help heal our planet.

Fun facts about water:

  1. Water is a substance made of hydrogen and oxygen.

  2. 75% of the Earth’s surface is covered in water.

  3. Water dissolves more types of materials than any other liquid.

  4. 96.5% of the water on Earth is in our oceans, covering 71% of the surface of our planet.

  5. Only 3.5% of Earth’s water is fresh water. 68% of that freshwater can be found in ice and glaciers.

  6. A newborn baby is 78% water. Adults are 55-60% water!

Here are some activities that can encourage us to think about the importance of water:

Water Science: Make learning a blast with easy water experiments at home. You can discover how water changes from liquid to gas, solid to liquid, and even different colors with some food coloring.

Nature Adventure: Go for a walk by a stream, pond, lake, or ocean! See the plants and animals that live in and around the water. Bring a sketchbook to draw your observations – it is a great way to appreciate nature.

Storytime: Read books about water. There are stories about fish, oceans, and underwater adventures!

Water Conservation: Teach kids how to save water. Show them how simple actions like turning off the tap while brushing their teeth or fixing leaky faucets can make a big difference. Have them track how much water they consume and use for one week! See how shocked they are at vital water is to our everyday lives.

With climate change being more apparent than ever, it is important that we take the time to learn and celebrate our natural resources. Water is priceless and without effort to preserve it, our ecosystems can not thrive.
